Ukraine took part in the second round of the Global Media AIDS Initiative
Elena Pinchuk, as a founder of the ANTIAIDS Foundation and Victor Pinchuk, as a shareholder of the ICTV channel took part at the second round of the Global Media AIDS Initiative that took place during the MIPTV audiovisual and content market on April, 12th, 2005 in Cannes, France. In January, 2004, Kofi Annan invited Victor Pinchuk, shareholder of ICTV channel, and Elena Pinchuk, founder of the ANTIAIDS foundation, to join the first meeting of the Global Media AIDS Initiative. They both committed to investing their resources in the fight against AIDS. They launched the first, private funded campaign “Let’s stop AIDS”. 5 leading Ukrainian TV channels joined the campaign and invested around 5 million USD in the broadcast.
During this meeting, Victor Pinchuk proposed to the worldwide media leaders to organize an international festival of the best TV spots about HIV/AIDS. “This would bring a new worldwide creative dynamic on HIV/AIDS, and help to find the right words to talk to the people in order to stop the spread of the epidemic” said Victor Pinchuk. The principle of the creation of such a festival has been agreed by the participants of the global media AIDS initiative. Information and education through TV spots is indeed one of the main priorities in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Another important commitment of the worldwide media leaders was to create a regional summit of the Global Media AIDS Initiative for Eastern and Central Europe. This idea was initiated by Victor and Elena Pinchukand supported by all the media participants.
Indeed, Eastern and Central Europe need more involvement of all regional media leaders to stop the spread of the epidemic.
ANTIAIDS Foundation and Victor Pinchuk pledged their support in organizing regional meeting of the Global Media AIDS Initiative for Eastern and Central Europe in Kiev till the end of this year.
In frames of the GMAI Elena Pinchuk and Olga Rudneva, Executive Director of the ANTIAIDS foundation presented the pitch among three finalists of the International MIPTV contest on the best ideas on HIV/AIDS programming. In the short-term category was presented projects that entered finalist panel from Italy, Egypt and Ukraine.
Global Media AIDS initiative was launched by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in order to involve worldwide media leaders in the fight against AIDS. The first meeting took place in January 2004 in New-York City. For the second meeting of the Global Media AIDS initiative in Cannes, Kofi Annan and Bill Clinton delivered special messages to the participants to encourage them in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Participants exchanged about the results of their commitments and discussed new possible actions for the future in order to stop the spread of the epidemic.
