Uganda makes new AIDS drug
PRIME minister, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda on Sunday launched a new AIDS drug, Trioday, which is a one-a-day therapy that is expected to improve adherence and retention in HIV treatment. The tablet, which combines three different HIV drugs: Efavirenz, Lamivudine and Tenofavir, is manufactured by Cipla Quality Chemicals Industries, a Ugandan pharmaceutical company headquartered in Luzira.
Patients will now take one tablet per day, instead of three. Launching the new triple combination drug at the Kampala Serena Hotel, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, said: “This is a unique and special day in Uganda when we witness new advances in the manufacturing of drugs”.
