Sir Elton John and Jk Rowling are officially Britain’s most charitable celebrities, according to the Sunday Times’ Giving List. The music icon and the author both gave away a hefty amount of their fortune to charities over the past year to top the list, which also included One Direction and David Beckham.
Elton John has topped the list of Britain’s most charitable celebrities.
The Sunday Times reports that John gave an estimated £26.8m to charity last year, mainly to his Aids foundations in the UK and the US. The singer established the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992 and it is said to have raised over $200m so far to support HIV/AIDS programs around the world.
Rowling gave away £10.3m of her fortune to good causes, including her own charity the Lumos Foundation, which is aimed at closing down all child institutions and orphanages around the world by 2050 and the Volant Charitable Trust, which raises money to alleviate social deprivation and for research into multiple sclerosis, the disease which killed Rowling’s mother.
Other celebs that made the list include footballer David Beckham, who donated £5m to children’s charities. Another athlete on the list was Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy, who donated £1m and Colin Montgomerie with £0.9m.
But musicians seemed to be the most generous, with Coldplay coming in at number five thanks to donations of £1.7m. Ex-Beatle Ringo Star was at six, after auctioning off his memorabilia collection for charity the Lotus Foundation last year. The list was then rounded off by One Direction and Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor.
